Downy Woodpecker male. Downy Woodpeckers
are often misidentified as Hairy Woodpeckers. Downys are much
smaller than the Hairy Woodpecker, have a much shorter bill than the
Hairy, and also have black bars on the edges of the outer tail feathers
(which might or might not be clearly visible depending on the bird's
