Barred Owl.  I had never seen an owl, and was fortunate to be driving by a neighboring farm when this beauty was in plain sight.  I was torn between the decision to pull over and admire it, or race a mile home to get my camera and return in hopes the owl would still be there.  Luck was with me, and the owl remained on its fence post long enough for me to get my camera and drive back for a number of pictures.

The farmer walked out to the road, no doubt curious as to why someone was pulled over on the shoulder of the road taking pictures of his rustic barnyard and cattle pasture, and told me that the owl lives in a stand of juniper trees and often surveys its territory from atop the farmer's mailbox.
